Vermicomposting at the Library : Worms!

There is always something new going on at the library!  As an education center and in conjunction with our Green Grant, we've become a demonstration station for vermicomposting.  We ordered a Worm Factory 360 from  Uncle Jim's Worm Farm.

I set up the Worm Factory over the weekend.

It was ready when our 2,000 red wigglers arrived in the mail.

And here they are in their new home. Gretel Clark was in the library just as they went into the bin and stopped for a peek and to say "hello"!

So far they have been dining on pumpkin innards, tea leaves, coffee grounds,  apple cores, and egg shells and doing just fine.  Feel free to come and visit them in the Director's Office at the library.

Yes the worms now live in the Director's Office.  It is a safer spot for them. After Thanksgiving I will add another bin and hopefully they will migrate up.

For more information on worm bins from our State funded databases go to Gale's Gardening, Landscape and Horticulture Collection Choose the Entire Documents tab and search for vermicomposting.  (To explore the wide range of State funded databases go to Online Electronic Resources.)
